it's the big one!
I arrived in Colorado yesterday for 2 full weeks - 21 college fairs, 11 high school visits, 1,000+ miles & 2 high school receptions! These types of travel weeks are ones where even flat shoes don't make a difference. ;P
(I even got a nice, little goodie bag from one high school counselor with a bottled water, granola bar & candy!)
So far, so good. This time everything went fine with the flight (Frontier Airlines is my new friend), it's beautiful weather & I've visited with a lot of students in only 2 days. I already had to have the office send me another box of materials!
I got to see one of my students who I met at a Fall & Spring college fair last year and who visited campus over the summer. It was good to chat with her & hear that she had a great campus visit. She's only a junior & right on top of things! She is interested in studying forensic science & plans on doing an overnight visit sometime as a senior...yeah, I have to wait 2 more years before I get to see if Simpson's lucky enough to have her "on board!" :(
Anyway, after working at hundreds of college fairs, here are a few things to remember when you, as a student, attend college fairs:
- Bring a printed sheet of mailing labels with the following information: name, mailing address, e-mail address, phone number, high school, graduation year, academic major interest & activities (or whatever info you can fit on 'em)...then all you have to do is peel it off & slap it on all those prospect cards at college booths! It'll save you time & carpal tunnel. :)
- Please don't go to a college fair solely to create a collection of ink pens...we see you sneak it in your pocket & take off...
- Step outside your comfort zone & approach at least a couple of colleges you know nothing about - it could be the perfect fit you didn't know existed!
- It's totally okay if you are completely undecided on a major
- Try not to take brochures just for the sake of taking brochures...your pile will be so large & overwhelming, that you'll throw it under your bed & never revisit it. We Admissions Counselors understand if, after talking with us, you are not interested in the college - you don't have to take our stuff. :)
- Stop by colleges of 3 different sizes - small, medium & large. Ask lots of questions!
- Typically the impression the college representatives leave on you is what you can expect from the college itself, negative or positive.
- Find time to not only browse with your parents, but also by yourself. Often times, parents do so much of the talking, you don't get the questions you really want to ask answered. Or, you may not feel comfortable asking certain questions in front of your parents.
- Don't just wander around in groups of friends - most likely different colleges are going to attract & interest different people. Remember, this is your future, not your friends'. :)
- No question is a dumb question! We're used to hearing anything & everything...
So, I've been super busy & sometimes have forgotten to breathe, but I'm enjoying my time here. I'm eXcItEd to go white-water rAfTiNg in Aspen this weekend & possibly go to a Colorado Rockies MLB Playoff Game next week. Yes, I do try to take time for myself & enjoy the scenery! I'm also really liking my Volkswagon Jetta I got to rent for the next couple weeks...it has cool purple interior lights on the dash - Ha. ;P
Oh yeah, one more cool thing...the t.v. show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is airing here in Colorado Springs this week!! One of the other college reps said the whole crew is staying at her hotel, so we may ask if we can volunteer or something...or at least find out where it is & take a peek @ the dream home. Unfortunately I won't be here for the big "MOVE THAT BUS!" shout.
Anyway, toodles for now, I'm so sleepy...
peace.
