SiMPSON DiD iT!

...we UPSET our BiGGEST RiVAL, the Central Dutch in a nervewracking, but AMAZiNG football game last Saturday!

It was a COLD, COLD day, but the STORM was HOT...we went ahead 17-7; Central fought back to tie it (thankfully we held 'em to only a field goal) & the game went in to OT. We scored on a 2nd down 25 yard pass. Then on Central's 2nd down, STORM senior Tim Stover INTERCEPTED it to WiN 24-17! The fact that it was AT CENTRAL made the win even better.

I wish I could see the replay! :D

This was the PERFECT end to a 7-3 season & PERFECT beginning to a new SiMPSON STORM DOMiNATiON..it was very special for the seniors, the NEW coaching staff, the 8 SPiRiTED shirtless guys cheering on a freezing day, & the entire SiMPSON community.

Not So Dreamy...

Do any of you ever have recurring dreams? Annoying aren't they?!

First of all, I'm completely FaScInAtEd, but somewhat creeped out by dreams because they feel SO REAL & so random.

Well, I've been having not the same dream, but the same recurring theme throughout the past 6 months or so & I would love to know WHY! I'm not being chased by monsters or falling from a cliff, but I still find it to be a bad dream & really uncomfortable. During them, I'm either back in high school or college as a student & there's some big test, paper or project that I don't have finished in time OR I've missed a lot of class & I'm afraid I will get in big trouble. The thing is...I don't remember that the dreams ever continue through the actual "confrontation" or the trouble I get into??

If someone has any insight on this, it would be greatly appreciated! I graduated from college 6 years ago & high school 10 years ago, so seriously, what's going on?!

FeBrUaRy FrEnZy!

I opened my planner this past weekend - of course finding large amounts of ink & no empty boxes. I may be an overwhelmed busy-bee, but for GOOD REASON!

I always write down my students who are visiting & this month is just as this title calls it...a fReNzY! I have 34 out-of-state students visiting within 3 weeks, WOOT, WOOT! :)

This past Saturday we hosted a few hundred students & parents on campus for Winter Visit Day, so I had quite a few juniors, as well as some seniors join us for that. This is what especially made my missed flight Friday night such a bummer - I also missed out on seeing my students that day! :( Thankfully most were juniors & I will get to see them again in the next year.
The following other students are checkin' out the aWeSoMe SIMPSON campus:

Kayla from Nebraska auditioned for a music activity scholarship, wants to major in criminal justice & psychology, is a potential Storm volleyball player & wants to get involved with RLC (Relgious Life Community) & intramurals.

Kyle from Arizona wants to major in environmental science or managament, is a potential Storm football player & track star & would like to get involved with RLC.

Kaylee from Colorado participated in Theatre Scholarship Audition Days last Thursday & Friday & would also like to get involved with music activity.

Melanie from Nebraska auditioned for a music major scholarship, is also wanting to study French, participate in SGA (Student Government Association) & Theatre Simpson.

Anna from Minnesota came back for a 2nd visit during Winter Visit Day, wants to major in communication studies & art, as well as participate in RLC and Theatre Simpson as activities.

Dominicia from Michigan wants to major in forensic science & pre-law & get involved with SGA, cheerleading, Greek Life & Storm volleyball.

Cameron from Washington is a senior who may be on the field next fall as a Storm football player, is undecided about what he wants to study, but considering P.E., sports administration or math. His sister Whitney is currently a sophomore Storm volleyball & softball player for us!

Amber from Minnesota visited today with her boyfriend & little baby (awww!) :)

Logan from Nebraska is a senior who is visiting tomorrow to meet with the Storm football & baseball coaches, tour campus for the first time & then meet with a business professor.

This coming Thursday & Friday is my Nebraska Van Trip - a fun road trip with prospective students! I pick the kids up in Omaha, bring 'em to campus & then have a pizza dinner with their student overnight hosts. They are staying in either a dorm, fraternity or sorority, will be sitting in on classes & meeting with professors on Friday. I then take 'em back to Omaha Friday afternoon...so, it's like a day & night in the life of a college student!

Eric is on the Van Trip & has been named one of our George Washington Carver Scholars. He is thinking about studying pre-engineering or music performance

Eva will be taking her 4th visit to Simpson with the Van Trip & is excited to stay where her Grandma once lived - Pi Beta Phi sorority! :) She has already decided on Simpson, wants to major in math while staying involved with music, RLC & intramurals.

Nathan visited a few Saturdays ago with his mom, but is coming back to take an even closer look at Simpson in action during on the Van Trip. He is undecided on what he wants to major in, but has thought about pre-engineering and then wants participate in Simpson's KSTM radio station, intramurals & possibly Storm wrestling. He will be the first one in his family to attend college - awesome!

Cara will be the lone junior on the Van Trip & will be checking out the math, chemistry, pre-pharmacy, Greek Life, RLC & Dance Team programs during her visit.

Ellen & Jen are juniors from California & New York visiting this month, too! I know Jen is interested in our Great Ape Trust program & scholarship within our psychology program.

This weekend is Music Scholarship Audition weekend, so seniors Stephanie, Jill, Candace, Caitlin & Andy from of Illinois, Nicole of Nebraska & Molly of Wisconsin will all be makin' some tunes to impress our faculty!

Ryan from California will be making his first trip to Iowa at the end of the month to visit campus & meet with the Storm football coaches.

AND...

Lastly, but certainly NOT least, a (cross my fingers) future Storm softball player, Jacki from Illinois, will be doing an overnight visit with a player next week. She is interested in our forensic science & biochemistry programs.

In addition to all this, yesterday I had a sUpEr Nebraska Open House in Omaha! I was nervous at first, because Des Moines & Simpson was getting hit with a blizzard, so the few student ambassadors, other Admissions Counselors & professors couldn't make it over to help me. They were also supposed to bring me the display boards with pictures & information. Thankfully, though, I scrounged up enough Simpson stuff around my house to sit out... Also, a Simpson sophomore from Omaha (Courtney) & our Head Football Coach Glo came over Saturday, so they were able to join me Sunday. I met with 7 great students - 3 juniors, 1 sophomore & 3 senior football players. One of the girls came with a 1961 alum, whom she knows through church & Lindy, a 2006 alum now working for the Kiewet Commercial Building Group in Omaha stopped by. Lindy worked with our Transfer Director in the Admissions Office when she was a student, so it was cool to see her again. We went to dinner after the Open House to catch up...

The next time you hear from me, I'll probably be down in another warm, sunny region of the country! ...Fort Lauderdale, Florida! I head down there this Saturday & am really ExCiTeD!

A Week Out West

it's Friday night: I'm not where I was initially supposed to be...en route back home to Omaha.

ok, so where am i then?! Stuck in a Phoenix hotel, having to leave a 4:30a.m. for a 6:40 flight. :(

what happened?!
Well, traffic in this city drove me close to insanity this week & I got stuck in it at 2:00 in the afternoon! 10 miles doesn't seem very far...until you have to drive it with traffic lights ever 4 blocks (no exaggeration)! Thankfully (or so I thought) I made it the Continental check-in counter 45 mintues before take-off...well, they wouldn't let me through! How dare they - what happened to the 1/2 hour rule?! There was another flight headed to my connecting city, Houston, but I wasn't gonna make the connection to Omaha.

BUT...good news! This bummer-of-a-deal isn't enough to take away my incredible feeling of accomplishment & ExCiTeMeNt after such a SuPeR, fAnTaBuLoUs, FuN, & productive "recruiting" week in Arizona!

I had breakfast (@ a good place called Jerry Bob's) with a really sweet gal, Lahneen, & her mom on Tuesday - she has applied & wants to play basketball & softball. (Sidenote: EMBARRASSING MOMENT - I spilled my chocolate milk all over!). Then I had a great conversation with another student, Kyle, & his parents that evening. He has applied & wants to play football & run track. Guess what?! He booked a flight this week & visited campus today! A senior I spoke with in Casa Grande filled out an application before I left & then I spoke with an applicant today - both girls are athletes, as well as excellent students. They are good potential candidates for our George Washington Carver Scholarships. In addition to these students, I saw some sophomores & juniors who I will definitely stay in touch with over the next year! I really look forward to seeing them apply - SIMPSON would be privileged to have these students on campus! Also, I spoke with some very friendly & appreciative guidance counselors. It's so nice to introduce another option to Arizona students that most are not aware of because of lack of higher ed. options in this state - there are 3 larger state universities, a couple smaller colleges & then a very large community college system. I was told by a friend in the Admissions field that one of the state universities in Arizona has a goal of reaching 90,000 students by 2011?! How in the world will that achieve effective learning & experience for students trying to "find" themselves?! Anyway, they all seemed thrilled to hear about all the advantages a small, liberal arts college in the great state Iowa can offer! I was impressed with how open-minded the students were to exploring something outside their comfort zone, especially one in a completely different climate! Most often, it is athletes in Arizona who become interested in Simpson because they still want to play in college, but cannot do so at the Division I level. Simpson athletics compete in the NCAA Division III. Anyway, there are some aWeSoMe kids out here in the Old West & they remind me of why I love my job. I enjoyed talking with 'em all...AND a week of 70 degree temperatures. ;P

By the way:

This is what I call a good old fashion "study" break...literally!

TOMBSTONE, AZ is certainly The Heart of the Old West! I paid a visit to the Boothill Graveyard (where some famous cowboys are buried), Birdcage Theatre & historical downtown, which was just filled with cool shops, restaurants, entertainment & roaming costumed citizens - it was much cooler than I expected & the history was astounding!! You really do feel like you walked right onto the set of a Clint Eastwood or John Wayne movie set. I really did feel out of place with my pink tank & blue sport shorts - even the visitors were sporting cowboy hats & boots. I recommend you take the drive down to check it out if you're ever in Tucson. Here a few shots from my trip back in time...

Read what these gravestones say, it's pretty funny...

This is where I ate lunch - The Longhorn Restaurant

Well, since I have to wake up tomorrow before the rooster crows, I need to hit the sack...have a great weekend & I'll back in action very soon!

SHOCKER.

HOLY SCHNEIKIES BATMAN!

I have most definitely sUpRiSeD myself.

57 BLOGS to date (starting in August)!

Why is this so shocking?!

'Cuz I've made numerous attempts at keeping a journal or diary throughout my life & have always failed...never making it past the 3rd day! Perhaps it's faster to type than to handwrite my thoughts & I think I really enjoy being able to add pics & experiment with the text font/colors...I'm very much a visually-stimulated person...

Then again, it's pretty easy for anyone to talk about something they LoVe...I don't think I could blog like this for just ANY job! :)

GO ME for actually sticking to something (unlike consistent exercise & less chocolate) & thanks to my loyal readers...

wHiTe-OuT!

The S.C. was Home to a WHITE-OUT Last Week...

1.) A Foot of Snow Blanketed Campus, Delaying Classes
2.) STORM Chaser Fans Sporting White STORM Basketball Tees Created a WHITE-OUT @ the SIMPSON vs. Central Games!

The cOoLeSt part of the WHITE-OUT:

I got to be there, YAY!

Since I work from home a couple hours away & travel all the time, I rarely get to see the STORM teams in action. So, this was a treat! I was so proud to see such a great student turnout at the games and the SIMPSON Dance Team & Cheerleaders did really well. The SIMPSON Storm Spirit was truly aLiVe Thursday night!

Before the game, me & most of the Admissions Staff scarfed down some aMaZiNg Pete's Pizza on The Square. It was so nice to hang out with everyone again...the fact that all of us Admissions Counselors are also Simpson alums is definitely representative of how WoNdErFuL this community really is! We all bleed red & gold, believe in The SIMPSON Experience, and have a great time working together on bringing more cool students to campus. We're not only co-workers, but we're all good friends, too - you can't find that in many workplaces... :)

SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) & Iowa Realty paired up to sponsor the WHITE-OUT, providing free t-shirts to the first 50 STORM fans. They also had a big paper airplane throw onto the court at halftime of the guys' game for fans to win gift certificates (a HOT commodity for poor college students!).

Like I have featured @ the top of my blog as the current highlight: The STORM Women's Basketball Team is ranked #7 in the NATION & they just broke two school records vs. the Central College Dutch! The STORM won 120-41, scoring the most points in a game & had a record 66 rebounds!

What makes this even better?! It was against CENTRAL...our BIGGEST RIVAL! :) ...it's always heated competition between the two colleges, since we're only 40 miles apart - a fun rivalry for sure.

Below, Simpson Storm SUPERFAN Greg '11 gets The Wave goin'...

Check out the STORM Spirit @ the game:

...and the STORM Women scoring the 118th point to break the record - the crowd goes nuts...

Go Red & Gold, Go Storm Cheerleaders!

Washington D.C. and Me! :)

location: reagan national airport, washington d.c.
status: impatiently at a standstill due to a delayed flight

I have learned that if any major airport experiences a ton of cancellations from bad weather, it doesn’t matter if you’re 1,000 miles away – your flight will be delayed. I guess Chicago’s O’Hare had 500 cancellations from a snowstorm yesterday. Poo on them! They just announced my flight would leave at 12 instead of 11:30 now. That could have been an extra half hour of sleep, an actual sit- down brunch, or a few more photo ops of D.C.! How to pass the time? Write my blog that I mentioned would include some dRaMa…

An example of what NOT to wear in an airport...seriously people...

I flew from Omaha to D.C. Thursday evening aboard my first trip on Midwest Airlines – a new fave. Why? FREE fresh-baked soft chocolate chip cookies! Not only did we get those, but they also gave us pretzels…this may not seem like that big of a deal, but no other flights give out snacks anymore. Ok, AND I like my chocolate! ;P

Flying past the Washington Monument just before landing

Airport Arrival 7:00pm

Took the Metro (subway) for $1.95 instead of a $20.00 taxi or $12.00 Super Shuttle. After all, my hotel is only 4 miles from the airport. I looked like an idiot trying to figure out how to operate the FareCard vending machine. Then I headed up the escalator to wait for my line...

After seeing one train stop & go, I checked out the posted Metro map again, got cOnFuSeD & proceeded to look like an idiot again. Which side of the rail was I supposed to be waiting on?!

I thought I was wrong, hauled my luggage down the escalator & uPthe other side to a different rail. I checked out that map & thought, "okay, this isn't right, I was right the first time dang it!" Dejavu idiot sets in again...down the escalator I go again & uP the side I was originally on. The other passengers I'm sure were sayint to themselves "man, this girl is never gonna make it in the city!" ...BTW, this subway is MUCH cleaner than New York City's!

Passing the Washington Monument & Jefferson Memorial on the Metro

Riding the Metro

The Metro's Pentagon stop

Gallery-Chinatown Metro Stop Arrival: 15 minutes later

Then it was about a 5 minute walk in the underworld just to the exit to the real world...

"Absolutely SuRrEaL!" was my next thought.

I rode the Metro escalator coming from underground & the first thing I saw was the bright city light eluminating 2 huge white marble pillars of a museum. "Did I just die & go to Heaven?" LOL! – I totally felt like people’s description of a near death-experience (minus the tragedy). It felt like I was entering The Light through the white gates to God!

G & 8th Street Intersection: Idiot Incident Again
The hotel rep I called the day before told me the hotel was only a block from this station....
I was the only person within sight pulling a suitcase, clothing bag & laptop case (that's embarrassing enough)...I got confused, & okay, LOST trying to find this ONE stinkin' block I was supposed to go down. I walked past the same 6 restaurant valet guys AND a really fancy restaurant window full of people THREE times, before finally deciding to call the experts - 411. I was going the wrong direction, duh. I crossed the street this time, so I wouldn't have to pass everyone again.

15 minutes Later Than Necessary: THE hotel on F & 9th Street - YAY!
I walked straight from a feeling of Heaven exiting the Metro to quite possibly the most awfully disgusting stench EVER entering the hotel lobby! I'm not exaggerating, this isn't just your normal human gas-passing odor...this is like all of your refridgerator leftovers + animal excrements + side effects of food poisoning all combined! Obviously, the front desk guy noticed my scrunched up nose & said, "it smells bad doesn't it?!" I laughed & said, "yeah, what is it?!" He said they just cleaned out the grease trap, so I told him I didn't think it was only grease that was trapped! LOL!! ...BTW, what IS a grease trap?

8:30ish: It's WAY past my DINNERTIME!
I hauled my stuff up to the 10th floor, dropped it off & I was so hungry that the unappetizing odor downstairs didn't faze my tummy grumblings. After asking the concierge what he recommended for pasta, he pointed me 3 blocks down the street to a restaurant called La Tusca Italiano.

La Tusca Italiano Ristorante Arrival
Just when I thought my day of stupidity was finally over, I walked into a night of dining with the Washington Elite sipping their wine in the latest Versace dress! No big deal, you think...well, I was wearing a hoodie & jeans! Thanks to the concierge for not forewarning me. "Oh well," I thought...I'm friggin' hungry. I sat down, acting like I totally meant to show up like that & told the waiter with a nice napkin hanging over his arm for a Sprite, LOL! The menu? Yeah, I had no idea how to pronounce most of it, so I just asked for the entree where I saw a word that looked like "tomato sauce" & "noodles." Good choice - it was MUY DELICIOSO! The waiter was really nice, particularly because he asked where Simpson was & asked if I was a sophomore - LOL, "gee thanks, but I actually graduated 5 years ago!" He couldn't beleive it. ;)

After returning to the hotel & calling some students, I ended the CrAzY evening with a dip in the hot tub, reading the D.C. Visitor's Guide...

Friday A.M.: AAARRRGGGHHH!
The ONE day I have to spend a little time siteseeing, it's POURING outside! (To make matters worse, the next morning when I flew out, it was sunny & dry!) I didn't bring an umbrella & was only wearing a small hoodie. I thought maybe it would pass if I went downstairs & ate breakfast first...negative. Thankfully, though, by this time, it was just light rain & 2 of the museums I wanted to visit were only a few blocks away. I've been to Washington a few times, so I was trying to see places I hadn't seen before. I booked it to the National Archives & was completely blown away...by what I saw!!!

THE National Archives Visit
I got to see the Declaration of Independence, The U.S. Constitution, Lousiana Purchase, letters & photos from Abraham Lincoln & Susan B. Anthony and more signficant documents in their ORIGINAL FORM! It was incredible. Another highlight of the visit was that SIMPSON COLLEGE was represented...directly across from THE Emancipation Proclamation! That's right...there was a signed Homestead Document by George Washington Carver & in the description it mentioned he left it "to attend Simpson College in Iowa."

A letter by Susan B. Anthony regarding the Women's Suffrage Movement

Check out this awesome handwriting! This is an article to The Constitution abolishing slavery.

THE Constitution!

THE Declaration of Independence

The first printed copy of The Constitution

An original letter written by Lincoln

An original photograph of Lincoln with Civil War Soldiers after the Battle of Antietam

The document signed by George Washington Carver & the description mentioning Simpson below it

I was only bummed because I just missed the opening of the Magna Carta exhibit! :(

THE Museum of Natural History Visit

Through the rain & onto the next place (the only umbrella I saw at the gift shop was $12...not worth it). Anyway, this museum was filled with several exhibits of Dinosaurs & Fossils, Mammals, Geology & Gems, Birds & more. I took some pics of the mammals, that, according to this museum actually exist...

A tiny, creepy, fliying Lemur-thing

Somethin' I hope to never run across... ewww!

This is some kind of armadillo, a little creepy & sci-fi looking to me!

Some kind of fox with very unproportional, freaky ears!

Isn't it ADORABLE! This is some kind of a hamster.

Some kind of goofy-lookin' porcupine thing

It was also very hard to fathom how OLD some of the fossils & rocks were that I saw...we're talkin' like 3000 BILLION YEARS OLD!

The oldest known rock from Earth on the left & a rock from Mars that fell in 1865

Diamond earrings worn by Queen Marie Antoinette!

A crown & necklace FULL of diamonds given by Napoleon

THE Hope Diamond!

THE Lincoln Memorial Visit
On the map, distance between sites seemed much smaller than what they actually were...I set out on foot for the Memorial at what was then a complete downpour - my dragging jeans & shoes are now soaked. I took cover underneath a tour guide hut, but after a few minutes I knew the rain wasn't letting up. I gave up on walking & went to hail a cab, which took forever. :( It cost me $9.80, so I decided this sadly would be my last visit of the day, since I would definitely have to catch the cab back to the hotel & couldn't afford anymore. (The cheap Metro doesn't go anywhere near many of the places I wanted to go...)

My dad was a history major & a major Civil War buff - he literally has a shrine to Abraham Lincoln at home & so I have grown up with an appreciation for history & the efforts of this great man.

The Gettysburg Address engraved into a wall of the Memorial

I was trying to decide whether to use a flash or not...ghost?! You tell me!

Another ghost?!

Looking @ the Washington Monument from the Lincoln Memorial on a miserable day

Me & The Stud

Unwanted Early Hotel Return at 1:45pm
By now, my jeans weighed about 10 pounds from water & I was freezing, not to mention very sore & uncomfortable from the chafing of wet jeans & fast walking...UGH! I tore 'em off, sat 'em by the heat register & went down to the hot tub to relax & read for a bit. After that, it was back to my room to work a couple hours before getting ready for the Simpson Alumni Event.

5:30pm Washington D.C. Simpson Alumni Event @ Gordon Biersch Restaurant
I headed downstairs & asked the concierge which direction I needed to head for the restaurant. Much to my surprise, he turned to his right & opened this irongate-type thing...LOL, it was my hotel's restaurant! (Idiot-feeling yet again.) It was a welcome surprise, though, after a wet day, that I didn't have to go outside all dressed up. The reception was good fun - I met a lot of really cool, accomplished alums of all ages - Classes of 1948 to 2007! We also had one of our current first-year students, Pat & a current senior, Amy Jo, come since they are interning in Washington this semester. After seeing such great people, it makes me even more proud to say I am a part of SIMPSON! Vice President for College Advancement, Bob Lane, President John Byrd & myself also spoke about the "state" of Simpson right now. They were all happy to hear about the positive direction we are headed with enrollment, financial goals & campus improvement!

9:30pm Movie Time!
Me, Paul '99, Katy '05 & Mel '00 set out for the theatre down the street in hopes to see Juno - they hadn't seen it yet & I was totally okay to see it again! Much to our dismay, it wasn't showing there. :( We settled for Diane Lane's movie, "Untraceable" & it was actually really good! After the movie, we unfortunately all had to part ways...'till the next Alumni Event...

My short, but eVeNtFuL gig in our Nation's Capital was now over.

Flying past the Lincoln Memorial during take-off

...& past the Washington Monument & Jefferson Memorial

My next stop? SUNNY, WARM ARIZONA next weekend!
